Inauguration Indonesian Student Association PPIE

The Indonesian Student Association Enschede (PPIE) held their opening ceremony at the Bastille building on 11 October 2008. Students from the UT, Hogeschool Saxion and ITC came together to celebrate the beginning of this new international student association.

Traditional Indonesian dance performed by students

The ceremony displayed the rich culture of the Indonesian people through live music, ethnic dances, Indonesian food and a fashion show where models wore traditional outfits representing different regions of the country. Two traditional dances called ‘Cendrawasih’ from Bali and ‘Saman’ from Aceh, were particularly appreciated. A representative from the Indian Students Association was surprised to learn the dancers were all students, as he had thought an impressive dance such as Saman’ could only be performed by professional dancers.

Guests to the opening ceremony included representatives from the Indonesian Embassy, the Chinese and Indian Student Association and the International Office. Key note speakers Prof. Dr. Nordholt and Prof. Dr. van Groesen addressed the importance of Indonesian history and the country’s unity despite its cultural diversity. Prof. van Groesen suggested that Indonesian students should also invite Dutch students to their events, to maintain good relations with Dutch students as well.
